News of Jamel Myles (a 9-year-old from Colorado) dying by suicide impacted me in many ways. One of the biggest ways was that it got me thinking about OUR communities. I started to think about the many destructive ways that the black community as a whole deals with black LGBT youth.
Statistics for LGBT youth are some of the most painful things to read. LGBT youth make up over 40% of the youth who are homeless as a UCLA study reported. The HRC is reporting that LGBT people are nearly 6 times more likely than straight people to report high levels of depression. The attempted and successful rates of suicide are through the roof for LGBT people (especially when compared to heterosexual people). Many of these statistics are just for the LGBT community as a whole. The dilemmas that are facing LGBT communities of color or Black LGBT communities are MUCH more haunting.
We know (or have accesses to) all of this information and yet the best that some of you idiots can do is get online talking about who is “sus” or not. You all want to use what little is left of your brain power to create sick and twisted scenarios where your hypothetical gay son or daughter comes out to you so that you can talk about how badly you would beat or disown them. Do black lives really matter to y’all? Maybe just the straight ones, I suppose.
People will claim it’s “just jokes” until there are dead kids on the news. And then, instead of trying to come to terms with the fact that we need to change this trash society, people will rush to delegitimize these kids’ orientations. It’s completely mind-blowing to you homophobes that a boy could like another boy his age, but at the same time, you all still remember your first straight grade-school crushes. Get real, dummies.
It’s time to be realistic and holistic about this movement that many of you claim to be a part of. If black lives matter to you, then ALL of them should. If freedom really matters to you, then anyone who is marginalized should be your priority. How are you trying to fight against an oppressive system while also trying to oppress whole LGBT communities? It doesn’t work that way. Some of you want to be the slavemasters that you claim to hate so much.
