Personally, I spread this heat around equally. Anyone can get it. But the way that Kanye and other men are allowed to hold on to their careers while they spew stupidity over and over is really appalling. Without question, it speaks to what Michelle Obama said when she told Tracee Ellis Ross that she was tired of "watching men fail up."
They totally can! R Kelly is walking around here with a whole career. Chris Brown's obviously idiotic behavior is constantly being excused by his fans who are just dying to see him do the 10th backflip in a row. 6ix9ine is out here getting millions and millions of views and it doesn't seem to be slowing down. Kanye went from being a unique voice to being a shoe-shiner and he is still being gassed to no end.
As a whole, they have never had to face real consequences for their pathetic actions in the same way that anyone who is not a cis straight man has had to. For example, it's corny to see people hold women to strict standards that they would not even dream of holding their male faves to. If you're going to go off, go off in a way that doesn't so cavalierly display your obvious misogyny.
That's what it is. There is no other explanation but misogyny. You hear something preposterous being done or said by a woman and you rightfully identify it as preposterous immediately. But since society has conditioned you to automatically put more value and weight on a man's thoughts/ideas, the man can get away with doing the same shit. You're actually going to take the time out and examine what the "genius" man meant. What were his motives? What did he really mean? If he said anything that may seem crazy, it must be because his mind is being tainted by the women in his life....right???????
Honestly, it's boring and predictable. Hold these men accountable so they might be motivated to stop acting like children in grown ass bodies. If society always goes easy on them, then they will continue to remain comfortable enough to put us all in danger–with little to no risk to themselves. They will have no incentive to grow if the systems around them are constantly assuring them that they don't have to.
I'm glad Jimmy Kimmel stumped Kanye and managed to get him to stfu and really think about the things he was saying. It needs to happen more often and it won't if society continues to coddle men like they are babies. They need to grow the hell up. Watch my video on the subject here:
